Open Postion: Water Operator - Water Department

Reports Directly to: Dustin Patterson, Public Works Manager

Reports Indirectly to: Patrick McCarthy, Village Manager

Starting Salary: $50,000 to $75,000 per year based on experience and qualifications

Key Accountabilities of the Position: Maintains and repairs Village water lines, water meters, sewer maintenance and other  village property.

Water Operator Duties:

  • Operates all department equipment to include backhoes, dump and tandem trucks, water valve machine, grader, skid loader and sewer vacuum in a safe and professional manner
  • Constructs and installs water taps and water lines for new construction
  • Removes and replaces damaged water meters by entering crawlspaces and basements of residences
  • Operates backhoe and repairs water breaks on all public properties to provide ongoing water service to Village residents
  • Operates snow removal equipment to maintain streets, sidewalks, and driveways of Village properties
  • Assists in the maintenance of Village water lines, sewer lines, property and buildings
  • Works closely with other Village departments as assigned
  • Water sampling per IEPA regulations 

Qualifications

  • One to three years’ experience with basic water/sewer repair and maintenance and have knowledge of water repair material, line stopping, valve insertion and hot tapping; or have equivalent work experience as a street, water or grounds maintainer.
  • Be able to regularly lift and /or move up to 100 pounds
  • Must possess or be able to obtain within the probationary period a State of Illinois CDL Driver’s license
  • Must live or acknowledge moving within 20 minutes of Chatham; Chatham Resident is a plus.
  • High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
  • Must be able to operate water and sewer maintenance equipment and machinery
  • General understanding of computers and have some knowledge of Microsoft applications
  • IEPA Drinking Water Operator Certificate of Competency (Class D or higher license) preferred but not required
