The Chatham Police Department has three trained car seat technicians to install and check child safety seats, free of charge. To schedule a car seat installation or checkup, please call (217) 483-2453 to make an appointment.
The Chatham Police Department has a prescription drug drop box located in our lobby for anyone to use. Please feel free to bring in any of your old or expired prescription medications so that they can be safely disposed of. We are open 24/7 so you can come in anytime to dispose of them, no questions asked. No sharps and liquids.
The Chatham Police Department recognizes the potential dangers that its residents face when meeting a buyer or seller for an E-Commerce exchange. We openly encourage and invite our residents to use our police department parking lot as an E-Commerce exchange meeting location.
Residents can request Extra Patrol Requests for an area or their residence by calling the Chatham Police Department or coming in in person. Extra Patrol Requests are sent out to all officers.
The Chatham Police Department provides a free fingerprint service that is open to any resident in the Village needing to have their fingerprints taken for employment purposes, licensing, etc. Please call (217) 483-2453 to schedule an appointment for fingerprinting.
The Chatham Police Department assists with local Homeowners Association meetings when requested and we provide neighborhood residents with a snapshot of the types of crime occurring in their area. We also provide residents with home burglary prevention tips and general security tips. To request an officer out to your homeowners association meeting, please call (217) 483-2453.
The Chatham Police Department has a portable speed trailer that is able to be deployed in locations all over town in response to citizen and neighborhood speeding complaints. To request this speed trailer in your neighborhood or part of town, please call the Police Department 217-483-2453
The Chatham Police Department will check your home while you are away. Please be advised that this service is not a guarantee that your home will be safe from any type of crime or natural disaster. An officer will check your home if time permits on his or her tour of duty. If long-term watches are requested (over 2 weeks) the home will be checked at least once a week. Simply fill-out the form HERE, within 4-5 business days before your departure, if possible.

Be sure to stay safe and informed by receiving notifications and alerts from the Village of Chatham. Formerly eLerts, our new system allows you to better manage which alerts and notifications you receive. Using the portal to the left, you can customize what notifications you receive through email, text, or phone call. We have a variety of groups you can join to get notifications about emergencies, advisories, and other events.
The Chatham Police Department sponsors an annual food drive held at County Market with donations and proceeds going directly to the Ball Chatham Food Pantry. This event has been an overwhelming success each year, and it would not be possible if not for the generosity and support of this community. Thank you! Join us on September 17th (with a rain date of Sept. 24th) for our annual children’s bicycle rodeo held at the Chatham Public Library. This fun event teaches children about bicycle safety and all kids in attendance get to participate in a drawing with a large amount of prizes given away. They also get a free slice of pizza and a drink. In past years at this fun event, children have gotten to see the Life Flight helicopter, the Mystery Machine from the Scooby Doo television show, and a children’s petting zoo, to name a few.
The Chatham Police Department is proud to have partnered with McDonald’s, Ice Deli, and Scoop Du Jour for this program which has proven to be extremely popular and well received by this community. During the summer months, officers on patrol are on the lookout for kids exercising some form of safety. Officers who see kids wearing a bike helmet, or even looking both ways before they cross the street, will interact with the kids and their parents/guardians and then present the child with a Child Safety Award. The goal of this program is to promote and recognize the safe behavior the child has shown or is showing and also to promote positive police interactions with kids. All Child Safety Awards can be redeemed at the Chatham Police Department.
The Chatham Police Department is proud to partner with Scoop Du Jour for this yearly children’s event held at their ice cream shop. Kids can come in and meet some of our officers and enjoy discounted ice cream cones. Be sure to come early though, this event is very popular! The Chatham Police Department has partnered with the Glenwood High School Drivers Education department to present a quarterly presentation about Distracted Driving to the driver education students. Students learn about the dangers of distracted driving, the many forms of distracted driving, and just how big the problem of distracted driving really is. All students are encouraged and reminded to pull off the roadway if they absolutely must use their cell phone while driving. At the end of the course, they are also issued a personal challenge by Officer Leach to make a difference in helping to combat the problem of distracted driving.
The Chatham Police Department partners with the Glenwood High School Government department to present a semi-annual presentation to the government classes. Government class students learn about the importance of traffic stops and what to do if they get pulled over, they get to see a police canine demonstration, and they get an explanation of the basic law principles of probable cause and reasonable suspicion. Students also get to learn about DUI’s and watch a few dash cam videos of actual DUI traffic stops.
Join us on Halloween night for our annual Candy with a Cop event. This fun event promotes positive police interactions with kids, and, our dispatchers who give candy out have been known to have some of the best and biggest selection of candy in Chatham! We hope to see you on Halloween night.
